Mrs. Essig
I was born in New Jersey, raised in southern California, attended high school in Washington state, and traveled my way around the world through college. I was raised hearing stories about the world from my Grandma and from missionaries who came to visit my father's church. When I got to college all I wanted to do was travel and experience the world, so I did.
In college, I traveled with some classmates to Africa and spent three weeks visiting national parks and learning about the Kenyan culture. My junior year I spent a semester studying abroad through a program called "Semester at Sea". Close to 1000 other students and I traveled around the world on a small cruise ship, making stops in ten different countries. It was the experience of a lifetime!
After graduating from Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, California with a bachelor's degree in Psychology, a friend and I decided to backpack our way through southern Europe. We spent two and a half months, wandering from city to city, experiencing the incredible old culture of Europe. It took six months of being back in San Diego before I was off again. This time to London, England where I spent six months traveling around England and bar-tending in a small pub in the business district. I finally came home for my little sister's high school graduation and decided that I wanted to go back to Point Loma and get my teaching credential. A year and a half later, fall 2004, I was looking for a job and found one in the form of a long term substitute position that turned into a full time teaching position at Nellie Coffman teaching 8th grade Language Arts...and I've been here ever since. I have spent a year teaching a section of 7th grade, but found 8th grade is really where my heart is.
I went back to school, University of California at San Bernardino, and in 2008 I graduated with a Master's in Reading/Language Arts and a Reading Specialist Credential. A year later I met my husband on another adventure, a missions trip to an orphanage in Brazil. We have three boys, Marshall, Palmer and Henry, who are a constant joy and learning experience. Marshall is our thoughtful eldest who loves to learn and socialize and boss people around. Palmer is our middle son and is our sensitive, playful cuddler always ready to help out his brothers. Henry is our youngest, our spit-fire and destroyer, he is stubborn and full of exuberance and life and opinions.
I love reading and imagining and have found my niche in Language Arts. I truly enjoy teaching students about the joy of reading and find great joy and satisfaction when I begin to see the same interest and imagination in the students that I have.
